How green is your reusable water bottle?
Plastic water bottle waste is one of the biggest threats to our environment. Any single-serving plastic bottle can take centuries to decompose, yet we continue to purchase bottled water every day. Many have caught on and switched to filtered water in reusable bottles and canteens, but if you really want to do the planet a favor, try using a good old fashioned glass!
Pros reusable water bottles
There are clear benefits to using reusable water bottles instead of single-serving plastic water bottles. For every reusable bottle that we buy, we are greatly reducing the toxins emitted into our air during the production process.
There are also environmental costs in the transportation of bottled water, as well as the packaging, all of which are minimized the more we reuse, instead of buying new every time.
Cons of reusable water bottles
All you need are one or two reusable water bottles. Unfortunately, virgin resources, not recycled materials, are used to produce reusable water bottles. This is a shame since there are plenty of materials already available. We know; it’s how we make our living!
Some stainless steel water canteens have a huge negative impact on the environment, even though we could reduce the environmental impact if we took materials from resources that have already been made available. Aluminum is completely recyclable; there is no reason to go and take new resources from the planet when there is already plenty to go around.
The ultimate green reusable “water bottle”
If you really want to make sure that you are minimizing waste and protect the resources of our planet, then you should absolutely have a recycled water bottle on hand, but be aware of the environmental cost of production and limit your reusable bottles to one or two.
For the ultimate choice in reusable “water bottles,” try drinking water out of a good old fashioned glass. Yes, you’ll have a few more dishes to do each day, but it will eliminate the environmental costs of producing disposable plastic water bottles that are wasteful and using virgin materials to produce a reusable bottle.
