Being number one isn’t always a good thing
The United States is the number one producer of trash in the world. Each year, the average person will throw away 1,600 pounds of trash. What’s even more heartbreaking is that most of the things that we throw away can be recycled or composted. One way we can make America great again is by taking steps to reduce the amount of waste that we produce.
US waste by the numbers
The US houses 5% of the world’s population, but we are responsible for 40% of the world’s waste. Of the 251 million tons of trash that we produce every year, only 82 million tons end up in the recycling bin.
Recycling saves energy
Each year, the U.S. throws away about 1 billion trees worth of paper products, and don’t even get us started on the number of plastic bottles that are destroying our environment because we throw them in the trash instead of the recycling.
For every item that you throw away – paper or plastic – without recycling, new materials are sourced to produce new paper and plastic products. This is wasteful on two fronts. One, it creates more trash in unsightly, stinky landfills, and two, the amount of energy used to make products from virgin materials is sometimes 80% more wasteful than producing recycled products.
- Producing recycled paper uses 60% of the energy to create paper from new wood
- Recycling plastic uses 80% less energy that creating plastic products from scratch
Reducing your waste
We can’t say it enough, minimizing waste is everyone’s responsibility. As a consumer, you have to make environmentally responsible choices. Reusing plastic bottles alone can save us hundreds of tons of trash per year. However, you need to take it a step further than just recycling, reducing, reusing, and composting your waste. When you shop for home furnishings, decorative accessories, or custom made furniture, look for products that make conscious choices to minimize waste and make a positive impact on our planet.
